Control system update – complete replacement or modernization?

Control system update - complete replacement or modernization?

In the glass industry, competitiveness is tightly linked to the efficiency and reliability of its production lines. The functionality of batch plant control systems is central in this context. From time to time, these systems need to be updated. But when is it justified to completely renew the control system, and when is mere modernization sufficient?

No two cases are the same

There is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to updating control systems. Each case is unique. Thus, this type of expert work emphasizes the experience of various cases. In LGT’s case, with the experience of over 300 installations, we can provide insights into different situations. Whether it’s delivering a state-of-the-art batch plant or specific components for batch plant operations. Below, we present two different examples of updating line control systems.

Renewing outdated technology

In the first case, we assisted a long-standing client who had decided to renew the entire plant’s mechanical equipment. In a situation where the existing system is mostly outdated and the client has a clear intention to invest, a complete renewal is often the most sensible option. This allows for the replacement of outdated technology and integration into the latest control systems, which improves the efficiency and reliability of the production processes.

Changing suppliers and upgrading an existing system

In the second case, the client wanted to switch from their outdated system to our solution. Here, the client was not yet familiar with us, so we started cooperation with preliminary planning. Such a situation requires a thorough assessment and understanding of the existing system to identify the best possible upgrade targets and enable partial modernization of the system.

Modernization or renewal in your case?

Just these two examples show how different situations can be. There is no clear-cut answer whether renewal or modernization is the better solution. Nonetheless, there are some indicators for both options.

A complete renewal of the control system is often advisable if the technology is outdated and no longer meets current requirements. Renewal is also beneficial if spare parts or system support are no longer available. In such cases, renewal can lead to significant improvements in production efficiency and safety.

On the other hand, modernization is an effective solution if the existing system is largely operational but needs updates to comply with the latest standards. Budget or other constraints might also favor modernization over complete renewal. Updates can be implemented without major production interruptions, minimizing disruptions to factory operations.
