Who?
Matti Jäppinen, 43 years old. I am originally from Lahti, but now I live in Orimattila, which is a neighboring town to Lahti. I work as the Head of Mechanical Engineering at LGT.
History?
I attended school in Lahti up to high school. I went to music-oriented schools because I sang in a choir and played the piano. After high school, I went to study mechanical engineering in Lappeenranta, and I received my bachelor’s degree in 2008.
In the same year, my wife and I moved to Lahti and I started working at LGT’s predecessor, Lahti Precision. Our family grew quickly during this time, as we had 4 children in just three years. After our firstborn, we soon had twins, and then a fourth child.
Life was naturally busy. My wife and I took turns studying while taking care of the children and working. In 2014, I managed to complete a master’s degree in environmental engineering at Aalto University.
LGT?
I have been employed by LGT or its predecessors for my entire career. In March, I will have been with the company for 16 years. I started as a mechanical designer with little prior experience. I had the opportunity to work on various projects and develop my skills within the company. As I gained experience, I was promoted to Chief Designer in 2016. During this time, I had to make quite a few site visits for supervisory work. International assignments were fascinating and provided a change from the routine.
This year, in September, I began my current role as Head of Mechanical Design. My predecessor retired, so a new person was needed for the position. We had discussed the matter with the company’s management well in advance, so I had time to digest the idea before starting. My responsibilities include maintaining technical standards, assigning tasks to our designers, subcontractor design, and placing orders. I ensure that there is sufficient personnel resources for our projects. I also make reservations with subcontracting firms. Supervisory work is also part of my job description.
LGT is a relatively small company, but we have strength. I have always enjoyed working here. There has never been a morning when I didn’t feel like going to work. The work is meaningful, and the team spirit is great. Everyone helps each other, and assistance is readily available. I’ve just started in my new role, so it will take some time to learn the ropes. Fortunately, the company is full of expertise.
